Non-native speakers of English shouldn't worry. I can guarantee that most native speakers make no distinction. I don't think most people know there is a separate word: "quash".
REPLY

Apr 13, 2012
Youssef h4c2s2fo2u2yea's profile photo
Youssef h4c2s2fo2u2yea
It's one of those things I can appreciate in literature, but would not fret about in every day conversation. Not really mastering English makes me stick with the safer option when in doubt. And then I always have the excuse of non-nativity to get away with a mistake :)
REPLY

Apr 13, 2012
M Sinclair Stevens's profile photo
M Sinclair Stevens
+2
+Youssef Hachhouch You non-native speakers are so skilled at English. When I read your stuff, it's so good that I don't initially realize that you are non-native speakers.

This actually raise a problem in some discussions. I've seen fights erupt or feeling hurt because the tone or the wording was a bit off and the native English speaker took it wrong. But they only took it wrong because they weren't aware that the other person was a non-native speaker.

We can't hear "accents" in text.
REPLY

Apr 13, 2012
Youssef h4c2s2fo2u2yea's profile photo
Youssef h4c2s2fo2u2yea
+2
There is actually a level of mastery you can obtain that works as a disadvantage indeed. Because people do not detect that you're using a non-native language, they can think you are less smart than you actually are too. Because you aren't skillful enough to be really eloquent. Or slower to come up with the correct wording in an attempt to avoid mistakes. Good, but never great.
This makes me think about our hovercards here: we're defined by education, company and location. I'd argue that we're defined by native language at least as much, if not more so. Seeing in my hovercard in my case that it's Dutch, then English and then French could help.
REPLY

Apr 13, 2012
M Sinclair Stevens's profile photo
M Sinclair Stevens
+2
+Youssef Hachhouch That's a great idea. I've been having a conversation about the information on the hovercard with +Yonatan Zunger . You should send your suggestion about language in via Send Feedback. I'll do it, too.
REPLY

Apr 13, 2012
Youssef h4c2s2fo2u2yea's profile photo
Youssef h4c2s2fo2u2yea
+2
Thanks. I have actually made a topic for myself here +M Sinclair Stevens & +Yonatan Zunger: http://goo.gl/YdYxW
Due to a lack of ways to star/bookmark posts, I've made this one where I 'bookmark' or post comments regarding possible features. I've tried contributing in different topics and I've tried in +Natalie Villalobos 's feedback post too, but it's still not quite what works best (for me).

In my previous job I've listed once 2K features for a social game in a Google spreadsheet: filtering/priorities/multiple contributors/colors/notes/... Before that we worked in wiki's. Posts & threads do not offer such possibilities for a more structured way to list & discuss features. I've seen some Google Docs by other members too.
In building products I know that arguably the toughest aspect was discussing the features with the community. They want as much as possible asap and would like feedback, especially on timing. At any given time there was maybe max 5% of what was in the pipeline that was ok to disclose. Timing was rarely sure. Keeping people informed and obtaining good feedback and ideas without frustrating them over progress or non-disclosure; that's a very tough balancing act. Especially if your every word can be scrutinized by the tech pundits looking for bones to pick. Even worse for a company listed on stock exchange.

You know that I'm an INTP and therefore ideas are pretty much non-stop for me, but that I do not need to see them materialized. I do not care who came up with what. I do not care for the spotlight. I do not have a focus at the moment. That's why I'm reluctant to contribute in a more structured way publicly. The best results would come from interaction with others, so I prefer to chip in in someone else's thread. That's what's keeping me from sending feedback from posts, as I feel I don't 'own' any idea. I understood that you as an INTJ prefer to take a good one to see it through. It's that synergy that I'm looking for: throwing it out there and have people that can sink their teeth in it.
REPLY

Apr 14, 2012
M Sinclair Stevens's profile photo
M Sinclair Stevens
+3
+Youssef Hachhouch said, "I know that arguably the toughest aspect was discussing the features with the community...Keeping people informed and obtaining good feedback and ideas without frustrating them over progress or non-disclosure; that's a very tough balancing act. I'm sure the Google+ team would feel better knowing that we do understand some of the pressures they face. One reason we shout so loudly and insistently is because we don't know whether or not our voices are being heard. And we understand that the developers can't tell us because they are under their own restrictions.

We engaged users are collaborators.
