Last weekend the weather was perfect. The skies were clear and the temperature was near 80F. However, Monday morning it turned bad. It was cloudy and drizzling and a strong wind blew out of the north. About 5 in the afternoon it began to sleet. The temperatures dropped to the 20sF. Now, it's really cold.

You might be wondering what the big deal is of freeze in February, especially if you live somewhere cold like Hokkaido or Canada. But this is the south, that place where birds fly to in the winter. (I found two birds frozen dead already this morning.) Spring had already sprung here. The wildflowers were blooming and plum trees were blooming. The rose bushes were covered in buds. The daffodils were up and just opening. Unlike the north, where plants go dormant in the winter to protect themselves against the cold, most of the plants are not dormant, but green and growing throughout the winter. They can stand a light frost for a few hours. But not a hard freeze for what's now been two days.

An ice storm is front page news in Austin. The people and government are likewise unprepared. We don't have snow plows, snow tires, or chains. Tuesday, the entire city shut down and people were told not to leave their houses. AJM logged in and worked from home. No buses were running, so our street was unusually quiet. It was garbage day, but there were no garbage collectors. (The mail did arrive, however.)

This was a particularly surprising storm because it was 78F on Sunday. Men jogging or rowing on Town Lake doffed their shirts. We had to turn on the air conditioning in the car it was so hot. That was Sunday.

It's Been Awhile

It's been awhile. Sorry about that, but I've been busy.

What have I been doing? Hmmm. I don't really know. (The time has just slipped away.)

We've had very strange weather. Last Thursday and Friday it poured rain. (You'd have thought we were in a typhoon.) This weekend was clear and warm. The temperature was in the 70s. But today it's cloudy and there's a cold wind.

So what have I been doing? When it's cold, I read books. We saw a movie, The Quiet American, which was interesting. And I've been watching a lot of TV. When it's warm, I've been working on the house and in the garden. Yesterday, I painted the kitchen. (Actually it took several days starting last Thursday. I also installed a new kitchen light.) Sometimes, I study Japanese.
