Generally Speaking

When I was at my parent's house, I looked through some old photographs. This one is of my grandmother and my great-grandfather. He was a sheriff in New Mexico. He rode a horse. He carried a gun. It really was the wild west.

素敵な写真ですね。Sheriffは「保安官(ほあんかん)」かな?
Back to the futureのワンシーンを思い起こさせます。

本当だ。おじい様の胸につけてるのは保安官のバッジかな。

Eri, thanks for letting me know that 保安官(ほあんかん) means "sheriff" or "peace officer". In America, the sheriff is usually the policeman for a county. My great-grandfather was the sheriff of Colfax County, New Mexicio. In England, the sheriff is the peace officer for a shire...like the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood.

Mieko, yes, that's his sheriff's badge (保安官のバッジ) on his chest. This photo was taken sometime in the early 1950s. Cars (which you can see in the background) had replaced horses. My great-grandfather was retired then, but they still let him wear his badge.
