Generally Speaking
This is Alex's family. On the left is his younger brother, Richard, and me. In front of me, is Alex's son, Shandon. Behind Shandon is Richard's wife and son. Then there's grandma. Next to her is Alex's younger sister, Katie, and her son, Ben. Behind Katie is her husband, Jez. Finally there's grandpa. Not pictured is Alex's other sister, Jane, who lives in Australia.

What a wonderful family. They all look fine. It is nice. How many grandchildren does you grandmother have? And how many great-grandchildren does she have??

Mieko--thanks for the correction. I couldn't figure out how to say "from left to right" or "starting on the left".
Another thing that's confusing for me is the different Japanese words for "my family/your family". This, is a photo of my husband's family, not my family. (More on my family next week--everyone is getting together for my parents 50th wedding anniversary.)
Anyway, Alex's mom (now "Grandma") has four children and four grandchildren. Alex's son (by his first wife) is 12. But his brother and two sisters married only recently. So the other three grandchildren are 2 years, 1 year, and 7 months old.

まず、いちばん左後ろ（ひだりうしろ）は弟（おとうと）さんのリチャード。
その前（まえ）がわたしです。わたしの前にいるのは、むすこのシャンドン。ラケットをもっています。
かれの後ろにいるのは、リチャードの奥さんと息子さん。
そのとなりは、お祖母さん（おばあさん）です。
お祖母さんの前にむすこベンを抱っこ（だっこ）しているのは妹（いもうと）さん、カーチイーです。旦那さん、ジェズはその後ろ（うしろ）にいます。
いちばん右の端っこ（はしっこ）は、お祖父（じい）さんです。
写真にはありませんが、もうひとりの妹さんジャネは、ただいまオーストラリアに住んでいます。
あれっ、わたしの旦那（だんな）はどこでしょうか。かれは写真（しゃしん）を撮（と）っています。
