Language is a physical as well as a mental skill. Drill is an important part of any physical activity, whether it is playing tennis, playing the piano, or dancing. Language students must exercise the muscles of their mouths and throat, lips and tongue so that the syllables flow smoothly and rapidly through them, producing a fluid stream of words.
To help me put the abstract concepts of grammar into practice, I developed these flashcards. They show the various inflections of Japanese adjectives. The flashcards are arranged so that the syllable preceding the inflected syllable are together.
You may download and print these flashcards for your personal use. Instructors may print and photocopy them for classroom use. For other uses, any corrections, or queries, please send email to msinclairstevens at yahoo dot com.
Thanks to user jhisco2 for catching a spelling error on the ~na adjectives cards. It's deshita (of course), not desushita. I've made the correction and am eating humble pie.
I've corrected a serious omission on the i-adjectives list. The flashcards now include formal forms. Generally it's just a matter of appending "desu". However, the formal negative ending "~ku nai desu" has an alternate "~ku arimasen"; "~ku nakatta desu" has the alternative "~ku arimasen deshita". I learned one way and forgot about the alternate endings. Now I've added them to the cards so I won't forget.
New cards have been added since the previous update on July 22, 2003.
