Having a Field Day

Undokai at Mizobe Gakuen
Taking a well-deserved Pocari Sweat break during the field day at our high school fall festival.

Field days are a lot more fun in Japan than in America. There are all sorts of silly races and games. And the faculty and parents are in some of the competitions. I got to run in a 3-legged race with the principal. Somehow I think my selection was rigged because none of the other teachers wanted to do it. But I didn't mind at all; I had absolutely no daily interaction with the principal and therefore could remain natural and unaffected by his presence. Actually, I think he was nervous to be partnered with me.

I found your site by accident. I was in the JET program from 1989-1991. I was 23 when I went. I worked in Junior High schools but I have so many field day photos that are just like this. I never could drink Poccari Sweat though. Boy this brings back memories. DH

How nice to hear from you. Where were you in Japan? I always enjoy reading about other people's experiences. Whenever I get together with the other people I knew there, the stories start flowing

Do you still do anything Japanese? After all these years, I still study Japanese, some years more seriously than others.

I was in Osaka Prefecture. I stopped studying Japanese. I had taken classes before I went and was disappointed to discover that it was not going to be easy to become fluent. I moved to a new school every 3 months and they were hours away from each other. One of my commutes involved 2 buses and 2 trains and took an 1.5 hours one way. I wasn't very good at finding people to practice my Japanese with. I was also very tired from being on all day at school. BTW -- Yes I can use chopsticks. My favorite Japanese food is okonomiyaki and I don't like nato.
