I imagine that yukata will be very sensible for lounging around the house during the equally hot and humid summers in Austin when I return. Although I've gotten several very cheap, gauzy bathrobes at the five and dime above Marashouku, I'd like a nicer one, like the yukata worn during Bon Festival dancing.
However, these are really expensive. (Well, nothing like a silk kimono, which can cost as much as a car, but more money than I'm willing to pay for clothes.) Luckily, the kimono shops sell roles of yukata material. So I've been looking at them for some time and finally settled on the one I wanted today at a kimono shop on the third floor of the Cosmopia.

When I'm back stateside, I want to make a summer shift or a wraparound skirt out of it. The material comes in a bolt just the size for making a yukata. All bolts of Japanese material are the same width, quite narrow compared with bolts of material in American shops. I love the standardization. The design of Japanese clothing is so simple...well, simple to make. But they're not that simple to wear, at least not if you have to work in the clothes. The narrow bolts must have been much easier to weave in the days when it was done by hand.

Jeremy Hedley waxes erotic on his fondness for yukata season. And includes a photo, of course.
Well, here's another project I haven't gotten to yet. And since our microwave is in the entryway on top of my sewing machine (because there is no other 3-hole outlet in the house, it seems unlikely that I will be able to do any sewing until our kitchen is remodelled. Maybe I'll have a grand-daughter someday who will want this material.

19910513 Monday Bicycle downtown. 18:52 Eat dinner at the Japanese restaurant in the Cosmopia. Treat myself to beer. As I am the only customer, the proprietoress engages me in a long conversation. Then, as she becomes aware that I can't eat and talk to her, she excuses herself to spy on me from the kitchen. 19:02 Buy yukata material from the shop on the 3rd floor of the Cosmopia.
