So, S. and I were watching the invasion coverage on TV at work last night and they were talking about sending in the Green Berets and the Black Berets.
"Berets? Berets!?!" says S. "Shouldn't that be "freedom hats"?
Hello there. This comment has nothing to do with your post, but I was wondering if "NipponDAZE" is like "nippon daze!" as in "hey, it's Japan!" or is it "nippon" and "daze" as in you're "dazing in Japan"? I'm just curious.. will be happy if I figured it out.

It's a pun on "Nippon Days"--that is, remembering my days in Japan. But since my days in Japan were spent in a daze, that is, a state hazy of confusion, literally "dazzled, or stunned", I substituted "daze" for "days".
Not coincidentally, fellow Austinite, film director Richard Linklater (Slacker), named his 1993 film "Dazed and Confused"...which is exactly how I felt the two years I lived in Japan.

More doublespeak.
