This is Gonna Cost Me

After discussing Ozu movies with Kurt, I get curious about which of his films are available on DVD and VHS. Amazon.com actually has a pretty good selection of VHS tapes. Since both Japan and the US are on NTSC format, I expand my search to amazon.com.jp.

I feel like I've hit the mother lode. Why haven't I gone browsing here before? Maybe they have the manga screenplay for "Spirited Away". Search for Totoro, the Miyazaki, and then find exactly what I'm looking for in related items.

Do you know what this means? It means I can buy whatever Japanese books I want online. With the thousands I save on airfare to Japan, just think of how many books I can get!

Isn't the internet a wonderous thing? I haven't ordered from Amazon Japan, but I have ordered from Amazon UK - original British editions of all the Harry Potter books - and I found the process to be quite smooth, especially since charging by credit card so easily resolves any foreign currency issues. I know of a few other online mail-order businesses that ship items from Japan. Hmm - I just looked up Ebay Japan/Bidders... Oh, no... I fear I have just opened a pandora's box of sorts... -Jason

We order quite a lot of books at amazon.com.uk as presents for my inlaws in Manchester--it so much cheaper than buying presents here in the US and then shipping them. That's one reason I wondered why it didn't occur to me to look at amazon.jp sooner.

I've bought all my Harry Potter books on our trips to Manchester and so that I can read them on the flight back. They are so much nicer than the US editions.

Oh I discovered another guilty pleasure on amazon.jp. Two DVD boxed sets of James Cameron's "Dark Angel" are available in Japan (and maybe Germany) but not in the US. Arrgh! (See, I don't spend all my time watching classy Ozu flicks.)
