This family photo was taken in 1900 shortly before Clara returns to America with her children. At this time, she is forty years old and has lived in Japan for 25 years. Clara's diary does not contain any information on her marriage to Umetaro Kaji, nor her reasons for leaving him after 14 years of marriage.
I am William Cogswell Whitney's grandson and Clara Whitney was my great Aunt. I am anxious to find all I can about the Kaji Whitneys after their return to the US and would be happy to make contact with any of Clara's descendants.

Hi, Joe I just searched for my mother's name and came up with your web site. Hope you had a nice vacation trip. Hope to be hearing from you soon.

Hi, Gwen Kiefer. I think you may be my long lost mother. Did you have 4 children & one of them was me?

Hi, My great grandfather was Clara Whitney's brother. I am interested in collecting facts about her story and about her decendents. My mother collected some articles about one of the granddaughters going back to Japan for an award, but they have since been lost. Any links or further info would be appreciated. I have read Clara's Diary when I was at Oberlin College in the late 70's. Are there any more in print or available anywhere? Thanks, Tom Whitehead

Hi, William Cogswell Whitney is my Great Grandfather, I have a copy of Clara's Diary, which I got from my parent's Charles and Nora Whitney. I have Met Sylvia and Macey Whitehead at Westown, Pa. I have lot's of family pictures, several of them William Cogswell. I converse with Gwen on the Internet now and then and she and her sister Murial probably would be the best source on Clara. Garry
