Today was like an ordinary Sunday, as ordinary as any Sunday in my life in the states. It seems lately I've been saying a lot how ordinary Japan has become:each new plateau of the ordinary is remarkable in this land of the infinitely bizarre
It was ordinary because we took the 10:07 to Oita-shi to catch a matinee: finally, The Abyss.
Whenever we watch a movie, or read English books at the bookstore, I become so engrossed that I momentarily forget that I am in Japan. After JQS and I left the theater, I felt like I was trapped in one those episodes of Star Trek where the crew visits earth in the past and tries to blend in. Everything looks familiar in a movie set sort of way, but you get the feeling that it's not quite real. I kept hoping that the natives wouldn't notice us (JQS's Vulcan ears always attract attention). But of course, they did.
